Let’s start with the lakes, which are possibly the biggest draw for tourists in Kvareli. The first, Ilia’s lake, is located in the Duruji Gorge and the surrounding infrastructure was reconstructed in 2011. There are so many things you can do around the lake. If you like running or cycling, there is a fantastic path running around the lake and, if you don’t own a bicycle you can rent one here. The lake is great if you like playing sports. There are basketball courts and plenty of space to play football around the lake and it’s also possible to go fishing in the lake. However, if none of these interest you, you can simple enjoy the sun, get a tan and drink delicious local wine at one of the many cafés.

The second Lake is called as Kvareli Lake. The lake is surrounded by mountains and the most breathtaking time to visit is at sunset. You can sit on a swing on the edge of the lake and watch the sun slowly descend behind the mountains. This fascinating spectacle is the reason why Kvareli Lake is a popular wedding venue. There is a hotel next to the lake if you want to stay overnight.

If you want to discover the spirit of Kvareli but are a bit pushed for time we suggest that you head to Rustaveli Street. Here you will find old churches, museums and a tourist information center. In the center of the street you will find St. John the Baptists Church. The church is surrounded by museums, one of them is the Museum of the Georgian Theatre Director Kote Marjanishvili and near this museum is the Museum of Money.

If you want to see even more there is also the museum of Ilia Chavchavadze, a Georgian writer who was recently canonized as a saint by the Georgian Orthodox Church. We highly recommend this museum since not only can you see personal items owned by Ilia himself but also the castle where he was born and the wonderful gardens that surround it.

So, Kvareli is location for everyone, for the ones who are fond of beautiful nature, or who just want to relax, also for the ones who want to spend time learning and discovering something new. This town will surpass all of your expectations.
